Foil vs Epee vs Sabre: The Fast Fan Guide

New to fencing? Here is the simplest way to understand the three weapons before watching World Fencing League live.

This guide is built for first-time spectators so you can follow the action immediately on opening night.

Foil

  • Target: Torso only (front and back, including shoulders)
  • Weapon: Light, flexible blade. Tip must hit to score.
  • Scoring: Priority (right of way). No double touches.
  • Reputation: Most technical weapon

Sabre

  • Target: Everything above the waist, including head
  • Weapon: Light, fast blade. Score with tip or edge (cutting motion).
  • Scoring: Priority (right of way). No double touches.
  • Reputation: Fastest weapon

Epee

  • Target: Entire body, head to toe
  • Weapon: Heavier blade. Tip must hit to score.
  • Scoring: No priority. Both fencers can score on the same action.
  • Reputation: Most strategic weapon

Earning a Point

  • Each valid hit = 1 point
  • A valid hit depends on the weapon and target area
  • In epee, if both fencers hit the valid target within the timing window, both score a point
  • In foil and sabre, only one fencer can score per action, decided by priority

Priority (Right of Way)

  • Used to decide who gets the point when hits land simultaneously
  • The fencer who first initiated a continuous attack earns priority
  • The referee determines which fencer had priority and awards the point
  • This can be challenging for new viewers to follow, but you will pick it up quickly in person

WFL Debut on Sat Apr 25, 2026 puts all three weapons on one event card, so you can compare styles in real time from inside the arena.

Quick Memory Rule

Foil = torso + priority, Epee = full body + no priority, Sabre = above waist + fastest.
